Rotterdam is a city of striking modern architecture. While all of the buildings are quite impressive, the most innovative and creative of all might be the Cube Houses, tilted 45-degrees in their playful, yellow color. These cubical structures look unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere in the world, and you can actually go inside them and even stay overnight. #ROTTERDAM #CUBEHOUSES #ERASMUS A cutting-edge housing concept Architecture in Rotterdam is famously some of the most innovative and creative to be found anywhere in Holland. And even after more than 30 years, its Cube Houses remain one of the city’s most eye-catching developments. It’s easy to see why: these striking homes are cubes tilted 45-degree on their side, optimized to make the most of the available space. The result is buildings that look, feel and behave unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere in the world. Dutch architect Piet Blom designed Rotterdam's Cube Houses in the late-’70s at the request of the city’s planners. Blom had previously experimented with cubic architecture in the Dutch city of Helmond. So when he was offered this project in the Oude Haven area of the center, he decided to expand upon his original ideas. Interestingly, the Cube Houses even form a pedestrian bridge across one of the busiest roads into the city center. The Cube Houses were designed asymmetrically to resemble an abstract forest, each triangular roof representing a treetop. The residences were constructed on concrete pillars with wooden framing. Standing at three-floors tall, their ground floor is the entrance, the first floor contains an open kitchen and living room, the second floor houses a bathroom and two bedrooms, and in some cases the top floor is used as small rooftop gardens. Once you step inside, the first thing to get used to is that all the walls are slanted. And as you enter the top half of the structure, your initial inclination may well be to mind your head. The Cube Houses are centrally located next to the Rotterdam Blaak railway station, with the Oude Haven’s thriving restaurants and cafés right on the doorstep. And they were designed with community very much in mind – as well as acting as a pedestrian bridge, the traffic-free area that connects the cubes includes a little children’s playground, as well as small offices and studios. Tilted at a 55 degree angle Rotterdam’s “Cube Houses” (Kubuswoningen) seem to defy gravity. Dreamed up by architect Piet Blom in the 1970s to help the city turn a downtown overpass into housing, this oblique housing was Blom’s attempt to defy the idea that “a building has to be recognizable as a house for it to qualify as housing.” Blom perched each slanted cubic residence on a pillar to create individual “tree” houses and connected them all to form an urban “forest”. Lilian raised her son Mitch in their cube home and while the square footage is small (some are just 240 square feet), the cubic footage is much larger. There are no straight exterior walls and opening or closing a window can be a battle with gravity. Today, Lilian and Mitch run their home as a guesthouse, but they said living in the home meant keeping possessions to a minimum. “A lot of people bring a lot of stuff into their house, but then you lose the effect of the building because already it has it's own vibes, or it’s own atmosphere.” The Cube Houses are now one of the city’s top tourist attractions, and an Instagram favorite. This is one of the most interesting works of architecture I have ever seen. Dutch architects usually have great creativity and inspiration for something like this! So, I took a video of the interior of this building when I was there.

In May of 1940, the entire city of Rotterdam was destroyed. Monumental buildings were bombed, leaving behind a shell of the former Dutch capital. Rather than let the city wash away with a defeat, what arose was an opportunity: to make a Dutch city more architecturally unique and modern than any other. One of the city’s most iconic commissions was that of the cube houses, designed by Piet Blom in the 1970s. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. The central idea of the cube houses around the world is mainly optimizing the space, as a house, to a better distribution of the rooms inside. The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The cube houses are located roughly 2 km from the central station of Rotterdam. You can either walk which takes about 25 minutes or reach them by public transport. You can also experience great meals in the neighborhood including the Opazzo, an Italian restaurant across the street that has the owner’s seal of approval.

The cube houses, also called tree or pole houses consists of a tilted wooden cube with one point on a concrete hexagonal core. In this "tribe" are the entrance and the stairwell. The cube has three levels: the 'street house' with kitchen and living room, the "sky house" with the bedrooms and the "leaf hut" at the top. Only in the core you can find vertical walls; the rest of the walls are slanted.
