Hundreds of Israelis told evangelical Christians who were praying at an archeological park bordering the Western Wall in occupied East Jerusalem to “go home”, underlining the strained relationship between them and religious Israeli nationalists. A new episode of CBS Reports' Reverb series reveals that as Christian nationalism attracts followers, traditional pastors fear for their faith and the country. Evangelical Christians are a powerful political force, but an extreme faction has divided the community. American Heretics: The Politics of the Gospel takes audiences into the buckle of Bible belt where a group of defiant ministers, congregations, and community leaders are challenging deeply rooted fundamentalist Christian doctrine in favor of a Gospel of Inclusion. Labeled as “heretics” for their beliefs and actions, they refuse to wield their faith as a sword sharpened by literal interpretations of the Bible. Especially those fundamentalist Christian interpretations that continue to justify nationalism and hack away at landmark civil rights protections for women, minorities, immigrants, and the LGBTQ communities. Christians today wonder if evangelicals are only concerned about politics (Donald Trump, etc). But evangelicals in the 20th century have a longer history, not only in terms of their engagement with politics and culture, but in their own internal struggles to understand their faith in the modern world. This video tells the story of Neo-Evangelicalism, or the brand of evangelicalism that strove to be intellectually credible after the fights over Fundamentalism. The founding of Christianity Today and Fuller Seminary, for example, are part of the story of this new wave of evangelical thinking and writing. About Ryan M. Reeves: Ryan M. I graduated from an evangelical university. We believed total nonsense. Before my deconstruction of Christianity, I attended an evangelical university. Personally, I had a decent experience, probably due to my demographic and then-fundamentalism. In hindsight, though, I see that many of our common beliefs were not only ridiculous, but dangerous. We thought God could give us the ability to control (AKA completely repress) our sexual needs, that education could threaten our faith if we weren’t careful, and that Jesus can make gay people straight. These ideas permeate the cultures of other Christian universities too. Whether it’s Liberty U, Biola, Houston Baptist University, or any other of the sort, these ideas thrive. The religious right is seen as a political force today, but it wasn't always. The plan to mobilize its constituencies took years. He's been called the mastermind of the religious right. Paul Weyrich arrived in Washington, DC, in the 1960s, determined to shake things up by winning evangelical voters over to the Republican Party. He seized upon the issue of racial integration in the South and the crackdown on private, religious “segregation academies” to win over conservative religious leaders. In doing so, he began a movement that would help President Ronald Reagan take office in 1981 – and also President Donald Trump in 2017.
