A mass rally held by Ethiopia’s new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Saturday, June 23, was marred by a explosion that killed at least four people, according to the Addis Standard. A live broadcast by Ethiopia’s government press agency captured the sound of the blast and the reaction of Ahmed from the stage. Abiy Ahmed described the incident as “an unsuccessful attempt by forces who do not want to see Ethiopia united,” according to Reuters. Ahmed said a number of people were killed, though this was later contradicted by a government spokesman, who said 83 people were injured, six critically, but no deaths had occurred. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed Ali met in Pretoria, South Africa, Sunday, January 12, to discuss matters of mutual national development, regional and continental issues as well as international developments. ————————— READ MORE: Abiy asked Ramaphosa Sunday to intervene in a long-running dispute with Egypt over a massive dam being built on the Blue Nile River. Ethiopia's ties to Egypt have soured since the east African country launched the construction of the Grand Renaissance Dam in 2011. Set to become the largest hydropower plant in Africa, the project has fuelled tensions because Egypt depends on the river for 90 percent of its water supply. Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan — where the Blue Nile converges with the White Nile before flowing north — started discussions under US mediation in November that are meant to yield an agreement next week. But major sticking points remained in the latest round of talks on Thursday and the parties have yet to clinch a deal. Abiy, who visited South Africa this weekend, called on Ramaphosa to intervene in the negotiations as the next chairperson of the African Union (AU), which he will take over from Egypt this month. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met members of the Alliance for Freedom and Change inside the Ethiopian Embassy in Khartoum, as Ahmed tried to mediate the country’s crisis in the wake of a bloody crackdown on protesters. Ahmed met with generals in Khartoum and is expected to meet separately with leaders of the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change, a coalition of political groups that represent protesters who drove longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir from power in April. Meanwhile, the African Union says it has suspended Sudan from all activities until a civilian-led government is formed. The AU Peace and Security Council announced the suspension Thursday as protest leaders in Sudan rejected an offer from the ruling military council to negotiate the country's political future. 🤍
