Learning from a Master Beekeeper honey bees on the homestead is our latest adventure! We received our first hive of honey bees, and got a crash course in beekeeping and how to take care of the bees to ensure long term success in our beekeeping efforts. We received instruction from a master beekeeper with all the tips on how to keep a successful beehive. Follow along as we explore and learn to build a homestead in middle Tennessee. In 2016 we packed up our three kids and decided to leave suburban life in order to rediscover our love of outdoors, and learn the necessary skills to build a homestead from scratch. Sarah is back for another lesson. Today we were doing hive checks, we will check the strength of each colony and react accordingly.
One of my former university students joins us for some "in the hive experience" before getting her own hives. I think she will do great. We find a queenless hive and compare that to a queenright hive.
In Lesson 4 we go over when and how to extract honey, the tools you need to extract honey, and how to monetize your apiary.
Note: After installing your package, come back two to three days later and check if the queen has been successfully released. If she is still in the cage release her manually by removing the screen on her cage with your hive tool. Once the queen is released into the hive, do not disturb it for at least a week. Make sure to be feeding sugar water (1-1 ratio) at this time as well. How to install a honey bee nuc or rather how to transfer honeys bees from a nuc to a hive; a slight change-up on the channel. I got bees and wanted to share this outdoors adventure. Thanks to my buddy for helping start the hive and helping me transfer the bees from the nuc to the new hive. This is basically a beekeeping crash course and full of information. To make honey, the worker honeybee sucks nectar from flowers and stores it in its honey stomach. Once the worker bee returns to the hive, it vomits the nectar into a processor honeybee's mouth. In the processor bee's mouth and stomach, an enzyme called invertase is added to the nectar. Invertase breaks some nectar into simple sugars like glucose and fructose. Then it vomits the partially converted nectar into another processor bee's mouth, who also adds more invertase, helping breakdown more nectar. This process goes on until most of the nectar is converted into simple sugars. Then the mixture of simple sugars is stored in the honeycomb. At this point, the mixture is still watery. Hence, the bees flap their wings which evaporates water and thickens the mixture to eventually form honey.
