It is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, but also one of the most preventable, thanks to early detection with Pap tests. The cervix has 2 major cell types: flat squamous cells lining the outer part, and column-shaped glandular cells covering the inside of the cervical canal. Both types can become cancerous but squamous cell carcinomas are MUCH more common. Cancer usually starts in the zone where the two cell types meet, known as the transformation zone. Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomaviruses, or HPVs. There are over a hundred different types of HPV, some of which pose HIGHER risks than others. About 70% of all cases are caused by just TWO types: HPV-16 and HPV-18. Two proteins produced by HPV, known as E6 and E7, INTERFERE with cell functions that normally PREVENT EXCESSIVE cell division. This causes the cells to grow in an UNcontrolled manner. HPV is sexually transmitted and is VERY common, but in most women, HPV infections resolve on their own and do NOT cause cancers. Factors that may INcrease the risk of PERSISTENT HPV infections include WEAKENED immune system, other sexually transmitted diseases and smoking. Chances of developing cervical cancer also increase with having many children and LONG-term use of birth control pills. Early-stage cervical cancer generally produces NO symptoms. Advanced-stage disease may cause ABnormal or IRregular vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or unusual vaginal discharge. EARLY detection is the key to prevent cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening may include pap tests ALONE, or in combination with HPV DNA tests. In a pap test, cells are scraped from the cervix and examined for PRE-cancerous changes, known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, or cervical DYSPLASIA. These morphological changes can range from mild to severe. If the results are ABnormal, the test is repeated again after 6 months or a year to MONITOR the condition. Additional diagnostic tests may also be performed. In most cases, MILD dysplasia resolves on its own and a follow-up pap test is all that is required to confirm. In a small number of cases, these ABnormal cells may develop into cancer, but they usually take YEARS to do so, which allows plenty of time for treatment when detected early. In the US, a pap test is recommended every 3 years, from the age of 21, or every 5 years if combined with an HPV test. Treatment options for cervical cancer include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of these. Early-stage cervical cancer is typically treated with surgical removal of the uterus. This option is the most effective in preventing cancer from coming back and is usually preferred when patients do NOT need to maintain fertility.

How does lung cancer affect the body?

To download this animation and many more, employees of hospitals, universities and libraries can sign up for a FREE trial to the Nucleus Medical Art Library: 🤍 #LungCancer #cancer #oncology MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: You or someone you care about may have been diagnosed with lung cancer. This video will help you understand more about lung cancer and how it affects your body. Your lungs are a pair of organs inside your chest that allow you to breathe. You inhale oxygen, which all cells need. Then you exhale a waste gas called carbon dioxide. This gas exchange happens inside tiny air sacs in your lungs. Lung cancer is a disease in which normal lung cells change into harmful abnormal cells called cancer cells. Cancer cells multiply to form clusters called tumors. These tumors grow and destroy healthy lung tissue. Lung cancer may spread to other parts of your body through blood or lymph fluid a natural substance that helps gather unwanted waste material from your body. There are two main types of lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. They are named for the kinds of cells in the cancer, and how they look under a microscope. Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is the most aggressive type of lung cancer. It grows and spreads more quickly. The most important risk factor for lung cancer is smoking. Other risk factors include breathing secondhand smoke, exposure to radon, having a family history of lung cancer, HIV infection, exposure to harmful chemicals, such as asbestos, and air pollution. Lung cancer may have no symptoms in its early stages. When symptoms do appear, they may include chronic cough, chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing up blood, hoarseness, loss of appetite, trouble swallowing, weight loss, tiredness, and facial or neck swelling. If you have lung cancer, your doctor will need to determine the stage or progression of the disease to help plan your treatment. Non-small cell lung cancer has many stages. In the occult stage, cancer cells are found only in lung fluids. In Stage 0, abnormal or cancer cells are found in the lining of the airways. By Stage 1, a small tumor is found. Then in Stage 2, the cancer has grown or spread to nearby lymph nodes or non-lung tissues. In Stage 3A, the tumor has grown to any size. In addition, cancer is found in lymph nodes on the same side of the chest or in nearby organs. Stage 3B is similar to 3A. But in 3B, cancer is found in lymph nodes on the opposite side of the chest. Cancer may also be found in lymph nodes above the collarbone. In Stage 4, tumors might be found in both lungs. Additionally, cancer may have spread to distant organs. There are fewer stages for small cell lung cancer. In its limited stage, cancer is found in one side of the chest only. In the extensive stage, cancer has spread to the other side of the chest or to distant organs. As you deal with a diagnosis of lung cancer, continue to talk to your doctor and your cancer care team. Colorectal cancer surgery - Open procedure - 3D animation

This 3D animation was developed with Houston Colon Specialists for patient education. It provides a medical animated sequence about the traditional "Open Procedure" that the surgeons at HCS avoid performing. Instead, they perform a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure or robotic procedure. A cancer of the colon or rectum is located at the digestive tract's lower end. Early cases can begin as noncancerous polyps. These often have no symptoms but can be detected by screening. For this reason, doctors recommend screenings for those at high risk or over the age of 50. Colorectal cancer symptoms depend on the size and location of the cancer. Some commonly experienced symptoms include changes in bowel habits, changes in stool consistency, blood in the stool, and abdominal discomfort. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 200,000 new cases of colorectal cancer this year. Combined, colon and rectal cancer will cause about 75,000 deaths. Killer T cell attacking cancer

Cambridge University's Under the Microscope is a collection of videos that show glimpses of the natural and man-made world in stunning close-up. Check out the rest of the series here: 🤍 In this video we see a killer T cell of the immune system attacking a cancer cell. Professor Gillian Griffiths: "Cells of the immune system protect the body against pathogens. If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them. The Wellcome Trust funded laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths, at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, investigates just how this is accomplished. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies." Cytotoxic T cells are just 10 microns in length: approximately one-tenth the width of a human hair. These movies are 92 times real time. The original footage shown was made by Alex Ritter, a PhD student on the NIH-OxCam programme, in the laboratory of Professor Gillian Griffiths at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research and the Department of Medicine of the Clinical School of the University of Cambridge. The images were acquired using an Andor Revolution spinning disk system with an Olympus microscope. Professor Griffiths is a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow. This video will help you understand some available treatment options. Breast cancer is a disease where some of the cells in the breast begin to grow uncontrollably. Treatments for breast cancer can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. There are several types of surgery, depending on the size and location of the tumor. This video does not cover all available types of breast cancer surgery. During a lumpectomy, the tumor is removed along with some of the normal tissue around it. In a total or simple mastectomy, the entire breast is removed. During a modified radical mastectomy, the entire breast is removed. In addition, some of the lymph nodes under your arm are removed and sometimes other tissues in your chest. Your doctor may also want to give you radiation therapy. This therapy uses radiation to kill the cancer cells or keep them from growing. External beam radiation uses a machine outside the body that aims radiation at the cancer. Internal radiation therapy, also known as brachytherapy, uses a substance that gives off radiation through different types of delivery devices. The substance is put inside your breast where the cancer has been removed. Chemotherapy uses certain drugs to kill cancer. These drugs may treat cancer cells throughout the whole body or can be given to treat cancer cells in one area. Another treatment option is hormone therapy. Hormones are substances found naturally in your body. Estrogen is one of these hormones. Your body uses estrogen mainly for the growth and development of your uterus, breast and ovaries. However, estrogen can also promote the growth of certain hormone receptor-positive cancer cells. One type of hormone therapy blocks estrogen from binding to breast cancer cells so it cannot cause cancer cells to grow and divide. Targeted therapy is a treatment option for cancers that have a specific kind of marker on the cancer cells. One therapy targets cells with markers called HER2. HER2 is a naturally-occurring protein on your cells that normally promotes healthy growth in your cells. Some cancer cells have too much of this protein. This causes the cancer cells to grow and spread more aggressively than normal cells. Targeted therapy drugs are designed to only attach to the HER2 proteins on cancer cells. As a result, the cancer cells stop growing and may die. Immuno-oncology, also known as immunotherapy, helps your immune system fight cancer. Cancer can sometimes hide from the immune cells that attack them. For example, both cancer and immune cells may have proteins called checkpoint proteins. When they attach, attack from other immune cells is stopped. Scientists are looking at one type of immunotherapy drug that blocks the checkpoint proteins from attaching to each other. As a result, the immune cell can attack and destroy the cancer cell. Your doctor may prescribe a combination of the treatments we have discussed or different treatment options than those mentioned here. If you have questions about breast cancer or any medications you have been prescribed, talk to your doctor. It is important to take your medications as directed and report any side effects you have. We are all enough. We are everything we could ever need. We can find beauty in the midst of turmoil, despair, and chaos. And I want to learn how to do this with all of you. Thank you for making this a safe space for me to share such news in an open conversation, with no filters. We love you.
