Support what we do at 🤍 Chisels are great for so many things. Especially because they can be used for rough or fine stock removal. I think there’s a tendency to watch instructional videos from some really great carpenters and think you need to have these absolutely perfect mechanics to use a chisel correctly. Well, that’s just not true and to be honest, a chisel is a really simple tool to use if you follow a few basic strategies. Obviously the more practice you get the better but there’s no reason you can’t get amazing results in the early stage of your journey. Let me know what you’d like to see next! Bevel up or bevel down chisel work? This question comes up often because for some reason, mainly from school woodworking, kids are taught to remove waste from a housing dado, recess, or other using only the bevel down. In reality, however, we need to be ready to use both or one or the other at different times. I hope that this video will help to show alternative ways and also show just how very versatile the chisel is for various applications. Number three is never say her name Oh the flame trees will blind the weary driver And there's nothing else could set fire to this town There's no change, there's no pace Everything within its place Just makes it harder to believe that she won't be around Oh, who needs that sentimental bullshit, anyway You know it takes more than just a memory to make me cry And I'm happy just to sit here round a table with old friends And see which one of us can tell the biggest lies And there's a girl, she's falling in love near where the pianola stands With her young local factory out-of-worker, just holding hands And I'm wondering if he'll go or if he'll stay... Do you remember, nothing stopped us on the field In our day Oh the flame trees will blind the weary driver And there's nothing else could set fire to this town There's no change, there's no pace Everything within its place Just makes it harder to believe that she won't be around Oh the flame trees will blind the weary driver And there's nothing else could set fire to this town There's no change, there's no pace Everything within its place Just makes it harder to believe that she won't be around

I see more and more options for sharpening a chisel and yet, with no mechanical means at all, I go from a chisel, I have dulled to surgically sharp in about a minute or less. The fact is I never need to use a grinding wheel, and I was taught to sharpen by the masters of sharpening in my apprenticeship days 58 years ago which I have never strayed from because I found every other option too slow and, dare I say it, DULL and time consuming no matter which method or which machine! Will I Ever See You Again? 25:02 MUS247 THE CHISEL ‘Retaliation’ LP Here: 🤍 🤍 The Chisel Are: Cal - Vocals Charlie - Guitar Nick - Drums Luke - Guitar Tom - Bass 🤍 Recorded by Jonah Falco at Total Refreshment Centre, London, March 2021. Mastered by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory. Cover painting by Tara Atefi. Released November 26, 2021 It’s going off and The Chisel are back to cause a bit of bovver. Following a trio of explosive singles, the band finally bring us their debut full-length album, Retaliation, on the London-based punk institution La Vida Es Un Mus. Having formed in early 2020 and featuring a crew of members with long-term associations to the London punk scene, The Chisel quickly secured a reputation as one of the most exciting bands from a pool of contemporaries that includes Chubby & The Gang, Stingray and Big Cheese. Their sound is rooted firmly in Punk but with influences that run across the board to create a distinctive blend of Oi!, anarcho, UK-82 and hardcore. Retaliation is an unmistakably British record that draws a line from 1982 up to the present day, pushing its way into your collection and torching your stereo. Opening with the agitated force of ‘Unlawful Execution’, the tone is firmly set by a song that addresses the brutality of the Met Police (“Tell me what’s the difference between right or wrong / When a copper gets to blast a lad who did nothing wrong”). ‘Come See Me’ is a ferocious ode to camaraderie in the face of mouthy boneheads and bellends. ‘Shit Life Syndrome’ is a poisoned reference to the same cynical phrase used by physicians to describe the effects of people living under poverty and in the grips of substance abuse (“How can you expect people to act nicely, they’ve all been left on the edge of society”). It’s one of many songs influenced by singer Cal’s experiences of growing up in the working-class town of Blackpool. Cal states: “Blackpool as a town is often overlooked or even looked down upon, I wanted to write lyrics which gave the people of my town a voice”. With tunes like these The Chisel show that they’ll never pull any punches. However, beyond the fury and the swagger there’s another side that plays to an additional strength; the ability to write a memorable hook. Songs like ‘Retaliation’, ‘Tooth & Nail’ and ‘Not The Only One’ could be described as modern day anthems (the latter has become a fan favourite since the arrival of their first live shows) and cement their identity as a band not to be defined by their influences. Retaliation is 14 tracks of dance floor-stomping-working class Chisel-music. Here and now, The Year of The Chisel.

Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva explains basic chiseling techniques. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: 🤍 Skill Level: Beginner Tools List for Getting Started with Chisels: Chisels Whetstone Grinding wheel Steps: 1. Buy a set of chisels of varying widths with high quality steel. 2. Chisels with wooden handles are meant for more delicate jobs and can only be hit with a rubber mallet or used by hand. 3. Chisels with metal ends can be hit with a hammer. 4. To make a basic cut, hold the chisel perpendicular to the surface being chiseled and tap it in to set the depth. Make a few cuts in this way across the entire section being chiseled. 5. To actually chisel out the material, hold the chisel roughly parallel to the surface, bevel side down, and use the bevel against the surface to control how much is being taken out. 6. To sharpen a chisel, hold it flat against a whetstone and drag it back and forth until it’s sharp. 7. For seriously damaged chisels, a grinding wheel can be used with a sharpening jig attached to it. Resources: Tom suggests buying a few chisels with a variety of different widths, all with high quality steel. These can be purchased at home centers and woodworking supply stores. To sharpen a chisel, usually a honing stone or a whetstone can get the job done. Tom used a diamond whetstone, manufactured by DMT (🤍 For more serious sharpening jobs, a grinder with a chisel sharpening jig can be used. Those can found at lumberyards and specialty woodworking stores. About Ask This Old House TV: Homeowners have a virtual truckload of questions for us on smaller projects, and we're ready to answer. A few weeks ago, I realized that I had a lot of old wood drills that were no longer useful. No problem, I thought, a great idea for a new video. I decided to turn these drills into new chisels for my workshop. At the same time, I will try to make handles from wood and epoxy. Watch the video to see what happened. If you have any questions, write in the comments. Enjoy the video!

This is how I tackle the creation of two timber framing tools. A slick and a chisel, both with seamless handle sockets. Paul Sellers demonstrates cutting a mortise joint by hand. He is using a method of showing the inside view of cutting the joint previously shown by Peter Follansbee who attributes it to Roy Underhill. This is to cut the mortise up against a piece of plate glass. In this demonstration Paul Sellers shows cutting the mortise first with a mortise chisel and then with a bevel edge chisel.
