Sign Up to the Full Course: 🤍 Consolidating data from multiple Excel files requires you to have identical table headers otherwise you can run into the missing data problem. With this Power Query Advanced tutorial you learn how to handle a complex situation where you need to combine data from multiple Excel files but it's not easy to match the columns. The Excel tables in the files have headers that don't match and they also have a different order. We cannot depend on matching table header names or matching column order to combine the data from multiple Excel files. In this Excel Power Query tutorial I start by importing data from a folder (Get & Transform - From File - From Folder). To make sure I don't have missing data, I use a mapping table to map the table headers of the different files to common header labels. This automates the process of appending data. For the table header mapping, I use the power query List.Accumulate M function. With this function you can loop through the mapping table's "before" column and if there is a match to replace the header with the label in the "after" column. Iranian Dr. Excel posted a challenge on LinkedIn: How can you split columns when there are multiple, different delimiters? Ex: Joe+Lisa+Francine/Kathy Rita&Sal&Gene Samantha/Denise This was interesting for several reasons: 1. It's very easy to do if you want a 1-and-done solution with just 3 delimiters. However, 2. If you want something truly dynamic, it involves solving 2 major problems with Power Query: splitting variable columns and merging all columns in a query. 3. I show an ugly but effective solution that I call The Elephant Through the Front Door Move. First. When splitting columns with Power Query, a value gets hard-coded; e.g., if your initial split goes into 5 columns, the 5 is stuck, and if you later have 7 columns or 3 columns, that 5 is still there. I found a solution to this here: 🤍 Second. Sometimes we want to merge all of the columns in a query, but there's no feature for that. But here is Power Query M-Code: 🤍 This was hard! But the solution I show is truly dynamic. Often, we encounter situations where we have two tables with multiple matching columns, and we need to merge them to get the desired output. In this video, we will walk through a practical example using two files: a master table and a transitional table. Both tables are stored in different files, but they have matching columns such as first name and last name. However, the positions of these columns are different in each table. Additionally, there are instances where the same values appear multiple times in the last name column. If we were to perform a simple lookup using only the last name, we would not get accurate results. Therefore, we need to consider both the first name and last name columns for our lookup.
