A terrifying video shows the moment a massive tiger shark attacked an unsuspecting angler fishing in Hawaii and took a bite out of his kayak. The wild encounter took place Friday afternoon less than a mile off the coast of O’ahu. Scott Haraguchi was catching fish in his kayak when he heard what he later described as a “whooshing sound” similar to that of a boat without a motor. A moment later, the angler’s GoPro camera captured the chilling sight of a huge tiger shark crashing into the kayak and chomping its side. The impact briefly knocks the kayak off balance, and its startled occupant screams in terror: “a tiger shark rammed me! Here it is!!!! Surreal shark experience, out of the blue, right off shore. Fishing for mackerel to use as striper bait and this monster swam up in about 50 ft of water. Muted a bit to avoid sharing the language that came out of our mouths, he had us scrambling. I can't explain how humbling this was. What an insane moment!!! We had no idea what he was until he got closer, he was as long as our 22' boat. First experience like this and hope there are more in the future! The coast guard was sent the video and they reached back out to us to let us know he was confirmed as a great white... what do you think?

Our objective was the deep-sea #shark, the bluntnose sixgill. This ancient species predates most dinosaurs, and is a dominant predator of the deep sea ecosystem. The lead scientist on the mission, FSU Marine Lab's Dr. Dean Grubbs, has been the first to put a satellite tag on one of these elusive sharks, but until now had only been able to do so by bringing them up to the surface. They often happen to people who are swimming, scuba diving, fishing, boating, cliff jumping or simply at the beach. In some cases, some people might be water skiing or even exploring coral reefs when they encounter these predators. Although rare, it has also happened to people who are cage diving as well. While I was bottom fishing in the Bahamas, I hooked a massive tiger shark on my Shimano Tiagra 130. We estimated the size of this tiger shark to be 14ft in length and weigh around 1000lbs. I was fishing out of Old Bahama Bay Resort in the Bahamas. We started the day deep dropping directly out front of Old Bahama Bay Resort. We caught a yelloweye snapper on our electric reel, then we switched gears and traveled north to go wahoo fishing. The ocean was very rough, too rough for wahoo, so we decided to head into the shallow water and try bottom fishing. I hooked a reef shark while bottom fishing and out of nowhere a massive tiger shark swims to the boat and eats the reef shark on the end of my line.
