Mat’s got his hands on this family-friendly SUV to see if it has what it takes to grab your attention in an increasingly busy SUV market. So let’s start with a look at the design. It’s notably different to the old model, with a whole new light design round at the back through to some chrome trim & bigger headlights at the front. You’ll also have the choice of optional side panels and blacked-out windows with higher-spec models! On the inside, the improvements compared to the old model continue. The dash has a cool swooping effect coupled with a large infotainment screen, and the centre console comes with a number of physical buttons. You’ll also find soft-touch, high-quality materials throughout. You can get the new Niro as either a hybrid or electric. The standard hybrid comes equipped with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine coupled with an electric motor to produce 139hp. You can also buy the Niro as a plug-in hybrid, which has the same set-up but a bigger battery and motor. So not only can it run on electric power alone for around 40 miles, but it can also put down 180hp. Then there's an all-electric version. This is equipped with a single electric motor which is good for 201hp. The price starts from £28,000 for a hybrid, with the EV starting at £35,000! We had the opportunity to drive the fully redesigned 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid (HEV) in California. The Hybrid trim makes 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque from a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The regular Hybrid averages around 53mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway (4.4L/100km combined). There’s the original-recipe Niro hybrid, a spicy Niro plug-in hybrid, and a fully-electric Niro EV. Unlike its electric kin, the Kia EV6, the Kia Niro EV’s battery is not built with speedy 800v recharge abilities. More features and bigger batteries mean more money. The Niro Plug-in Hybrid starts at $33,740 not including destination charges. The competitive set varies depending on which Niro you’re considering. The Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid, Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid, Honda CR-V hybrid, or maybe even the Prius might earn your attention. And among EVs there’s the Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Kona Electric, and VW ID.4. The Kia Niro hybrid has a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine and an electric motor, a 6-speed dual clutch transmission, 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It gets 4.5L/100 km, 52 MPG city and 4.4L/100 km, 53 MPG highway. We were averaging 58.9 MPG which is fantastic. The Kia Niro Hybrid starts at $29,995 CAD, EX $31,995 CAD, EX Premium $34,695 CAD SX $38,695 CAD. In the US, $26,490 USD, EX $29,090 USD, EX Touring $31,390 USD, SX $32,490 USD and SX Touring $34,790 USD. The Kia Niro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain adds a more powerful electric motor for a combined 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It gets 55 km/33 miles of EV range and has an 11.1 kWh battery. There is only one Kia Niro PHEV trim in Canada, it’s priced at $37,995 CAD. In the US, it starts at $33,740 USD, SX Touring $39,490 USD. The Kia Niro plug-in hybrid gets a combined 2.1Le/100 km, 108 MPGe. When the battery is depleted 4.8L/100 km, 49 MPG combined. All Niro models are FWD only.Technology, comfort, fuel efficiency and a bit of luxury in this sub-compact SUV. It even has an available power tailgate which not many crossovers have in this class. The interior is modern and clean with improved tech giving it an upscale feel for this sub-compact segment. The hybrid comes standard with an 8” touchscreen, available 10.25”, the PHEV gets the larger 10.25” touchscreen as a standard feature. It also comes standard with cloth upholstery, available cloth and leatherette as well as leatherette on the top trim. There’s also an available 10.25” digital driver display. Kia says, the interior includes materials that are recycled and animal-free. The infotainment and HVAC controls are conveniently packaged on one touchscreen. If the first generation Kia Niro offered people a buffet of choices, the new-generation, second-take on the formula has refined it to a set menu. There are two powertrain options available - the entry-level Hybrid (HEV) and the top-spec Electric (EV / BEV) - and two grades of each of those, too (S and GT-Line, respectively). The first-gen model also threw in a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in two grades, but low uptake on that powertrain has lead Kia to axe it for the second-gen 2023 Kia Niro range. But prices are up by a lot, and while the new look might get plenty of attention from the outside, the level of "wow factor" you find inside will very much depend on how much you have to spend. Andrew Chesterton drove both the hybrid and EV models, but his video is focusing on the Niro Electric. First Drive: The Niro has grown up for 2023 and Kia decided to bring as much electrification as you want. This plug-in hybrid Niro competes with the Toyota RAV4 Prime, Hyundai Tucson PHEV and Ford Escape PHEV. On the outside you will discover a unique front fascia, 18in wheels, and gloss black trim. Welcome everyone to my review of the new Kia Niro Hybrid. The Niro is one of those cars that allows you to have you cake and eat if you’re wanting to transition to an electrified vehicle. This second generation picks up where it’s predecessor left off. Allowing you to go for either a full hybrid, Plug-in hybrid and full electric. The first thing you’ll notice about the new Niro is the bold styling. Hyundai Group are on a roll with their designs and the Niro is a truly striking crossover with its heartbeat DRL’s and vented C-Pillar. The engine is nice and simple as there’s a 1.6L petrol engine under the hood.
