In this video, I explain how audio and sound works on Linux based comptuers and systems. More specifically, I go over the point of sound hardware, kernel drivers such as OSS and ALSA and userspace sound servers such as PulseAudio, Jack and Pipewire. Along the way, I discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the current implementations, as well as why one implementation is often favored over another. Finally, I discuss the latest-and-greatest sound server, Pipewire, what it means, and how you can benefit from the improvements. This video is a bit rambly at times, so please stick with me, and I hope you learn something throughout and feed your curiosity. Please feel free to use the timestamps below to skip between sections! I constantly find myself at odds with people who choose and recommend software based on memes. Pulseaudio is totally """bloated""", but using ALSA alone isn't a viable alternative for 99.9999% of people who want a functioning audio system. Pulse is a """bloated""" front-end for ALSA, but before you whine about it, try to configure ALSA yourself for something beyond watching anime and YouTube. Yeah, yeah I know there are things like jack and such too. I've never really used it and documentation is just as scarce as for ALSA. Anyway, this is a video on why I use Pulseaudio and I'm not convinced that there are people who don't who do it for non-meme reasons. Is PipeWire ready for your studio? Maybe not yet!

Is Pipewire ready for your studio? Eh, maybe not yet! The Jack Audio Connection Kit still outperforms Pipewire at 64 samples buffer 44.1khz. This is roughly a 1.5 millisecond block latency, and represents about 3 milliseconds of round-trip latency. For live performance, or studios that rely heavily on midi input + software monitoring, I would personally stick with the realtime kernel, low latency tweaks, and jack audio connection kit. For hobbyists that would like to connect audio and midi devices with ease, Pipewire may be the better choice. In fact, it now comes standard with many Linux distributions. The addition of the pipewire-jack package and a patcher such as Carla make it a pretty stress-free setup for most. Some fine-tuned configuration will likely be necessary for decent latency when recording audio though, as pipewire defaults to 1024 samples (24 ms block latency, 48 ms round-trip).

In the embedded multimedia world, it is often a challenge to orchestrate multimedia streams in such a way so that the final product is robust, consistent and secure. In many cases, such systems end up doing all their multimedia in a single custom GStreamer pipeline or they develop complex orchestration systems around desktop-oriented solutions, circumventing desktop behaviour. PipeWire is a simple but powerful multimedia IPC framework that can be used to implement any kind of multimedia routing service, like an audio server (ex. PulseAudio, JACK) or a video capture portal. WirePlumber is a modular and scriptable session manager (i.e. orchestrator) for PipeWire. In this presentation, George will walk you through an interactive demo showing how easy it is to implement a custom, powerful and secure audio/video stream routing service using PipeWire, WirePlumber and rules scripted in Lua. Presented by George Kiagiadakis. #LVC21F #Linux #PireWire #WirePlumber #GStreamer #Lua #OpenSource #Multimedia #PulseAudio

Pulseaudio has a lot of issues related to audio latency. To solve this problem, we can use pipewire to get proper low latency audio. EDIT: it seems pipewire has moved their configuration files. You must now create a directory in your $HOME/.config directory and copy the relevant files. "mkdir -p $HOME/.config/pipewire" "cp -r /usr/share/pipewire/* $HOME/.config/pipewire/" and make your changes there. When I started learning music production in the mid 2000's, the choice was: Windows, or Mac? In intervening 15+ years, support for Linux as a pro-audio OS has got to the point that I don't use anything else Two major improvements have been Hubert Figuière's efforts around Flatpak packaging, and Wim Tayman's work leading Pipewire development. I will highlight those and more creative apps that are available to modern Linux users.

*note: lol there are a few instances where I say "works under Pulseaudio" when I really meant to say "PipeWire". Didn't notice when editing but you should be able to tell when that happens haha. This is how I've been using PipeWire on my main workstation since switching from a traditional JACK + PulseAudio setup.
