The Range Rover has always been seen as pretty much the pinnacle of British SUV craftsmanship (no offence, Bentley Bentayga…), but the question is, does the latest generation live up to the quality of the last iteration? Well, it’s time to find out! Mat’s joined forces with Yianni to put the new Range through its paces. In terms of cost, it starts from around £99,000, jumping all the way up to £180,000 - so what do you get for your money? Well starting with the design, it’s so much smoother and sleeker than before. From the front through to the back, this is one SUV that’s done away with the creases and curves, but one which thankfully remains unmistakably a Range Rover! Around the back, you’ll find hidden lights which are integrated into the car, along with flush door handles on either side and an all-new grille design up front. The quality continues on the inside, too. Sure, it’s maybe not as luxurious as a Bentayga, but it’s still built to a high quality! The chairs are super comfy, and there is a whole load of storage to be found throughout the cabin. You get a big infotainment screen up front coupled with some physical climate control buttons, and of course, it comes with a digital dial display. In terms of engines, there are a number of petrol and diesel options to choose from, with the range-topper being a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can deliver 530hp! So what do you think? While other Range Rover models aim to deliver comfort and luxury, the Range Rover Sport offers those traits alongside athleticism on par with rivals such as the BMW X5, the Porsche Cayenne, and the Mercedes-AMG GLE53. All its available powertrains pack a reasonable punch, from the 355-hp inline-six to the 542-hp plug-in hybrid. The Range Rover Sport's cabin is also impressive, with fine materials draped over two comfortable rows of seats. But this mix of prestige and refinement means its starting price is higher than that of other SUVs, so prepare to pay a premium to park the Range Rover Sport in your driveway. What's New for 2024? The big news for 2024 is the addition of the 626-hp Range Rover Sport SV, but we review that model separately. The regular Range Rover Sport gains a new 542-hp plug-in-hybrid powertrain called P550e. This replaces last year's P440e model and offers both more power and more electric driving range. Elsewhere, the Range Rover Sport's infotainment system has been upgraded to the latest Pivi Pro 4 software interface. The update includes sliders for volume and climate controls that Land Rover says are easier to use; the system menus have been simplified as well to make it easier to navigate. The V-8–powered P530 powertrain has been discontinued for 2024 to make room in the lineup for the performance-oriented SV model. Pricing and Which One to Buy P360 SE: $85,075 P400 Dynamic SE: $92,175 P550 PHEV Autobiography: $119,675 We think the more powerful P400 Dynamic SE is the trim to go with. Its extra horsepower will undoubtedly give it a bit of a boost both around town and on the highway, and it offers a litany of luxury and convenience features without requiring a six-figure bill. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The entry-level engine is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that employs a 48-volt hybrid system and makes 355 horsepower in the P360 SE and 395 horsepower in the P400 SE Dynamic. When we tested the P360 SE, it needed only 5.7 seconds to hit 60 mph but felt more sluggish than that around town. Our test vehicle delivered peerless ride quality, though, which was appreciated over the broken tarmac near our Michigan headquarters. A plug-in-hybrid P5500e setup is exclusive to the fancy Autobiography trim and pairs an electric motor to the inline-six for a combined 542 horsepower. Land Rover estimates the PHEV powertrain will motivate the Range Rover Sport to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive, and an adjustable air suspension. The Range Rover Sport can also be had with an optional performance driving setup called Stormer Handling Pack, which adds rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring. During our initial test drive, we were impressed with the Range Rover Sport's blend of comfort and athleticism and noted that its rear-wheel-steering system made maneuvering in tight spaces less challenging than in other similarly sized SUVs. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The interior design of the Range Rover Sport is an exercise in minimalism, with few physical buttons and switches and a streamlined appearance throughout the cabin. Buyers can choose from either textile or genuine leather upholstery in attractive two-tone designs. The dark-tinted chrome accents look particularly premium. Power-adjustable front seats are standard, but a set of chairs with up to 22 ways of adjustability as well as massage, ventilation, and winged headrests is optional. Meet the new Range Rover Sport! It’s the sportier edition of the world-renowned Range Rover, and Mat’s about to find out if you SUV lovers should go for the sport edition over the standard model. On first impressions, it’s unmistakably a Range Rover, with a whole load of similarities to the standard edition. However, there are a couple of differences that show off that it’s the Sport edition. Around the back, there’s a big roof spoiler (the largest on any Range Rover, no less!), and both the front and rear are a bit more curvaceous than the standard Range Rover. On the inside, the similarities continue, with the same dashboard and infotainment screen design. The centre console is slightly different, but overall it’s unmistakably a Range Rover of some description. The infotainment system is good (if a bit laggy) and you’re treated to a large digital dial display. Some areas of the cabin feel a bit cheaper than the standard Range Rover, but you certainly wouldn’t be disappointed if you were driving this on a daily basis! There are a number of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines to choose from, but the range-topper is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can deliver 530hp! However, the plug-in hybrid isn’t a bad option, with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six & electric motor delivering 510hp, along with the option to travel up to 70 miles on electric power alone! The Range Rover Sport starts from £80,000, but is it really worth choosing over competitors such as the Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5? Or more importantly, should you just pay a bit more and go for the standard Range Rover? You’ll have to join Mat and find out for yourself! The Range Rover Sport first launched in 2005, back when quick 4x4s were still in their infancy. Now everyone’s at it, giving the lads and lasses in Gaydon a tougher task than ever keeping theirs relevant. The Sport follows a few months after the full-fat Range Rover’s reinvention. It’s 35 per cent stiffer and sits 20mm lower – to help justify its suffix – and comes with four-wheel drive as standard, hooked up to an array of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains. Yep, diesel soldiers firmly on here, and kicks the range off at a smidge over £80,000. That gets you a D300 – three litres, six cylinders and a mite under 300bhp – in base SE trim. ‘Base’ being purely a relative term in the Range Rover universe, of course. We wish you the best of luck spending just that, though; options pile on easily and the flagship P530 – with a 523bhp, twin-turbo V8 engine under its clamshell bonnet – kicks off at a stocky £116,190. Diesels and V8s? Is it really relevant? Worry not! There is a plug-in hybrid at launch, too, while a fully electric version lands in 2024. The former comes in two specs, offering either 434 (P440e) or 503bhp (P510e) peaks. Both claim to offer 70 miles of electric-only range – let’s call it 50 in the real world – and Land Rover reckons 75 per cent of its customers’ journeys can potentially be covered with zero local emissions. And, of course, zero engine noise. If your journeys are usually so short, then there’s naturally an argument you don’t really need a plush, £100k SUV. But there’s rarely been a great deal of rationality applied by anyone purchasing a car in this increasingly crowded corner of the world. If three-ton lumps must crawl around urban environments, then we’re at least all significantly better off if they’re doing so more eloquently. How heavy? It’s a big old beast with a bunch of batteries aboard, there’s no denying that. Land Rover claims an unladen weight of ‘from 2,810kg’ for the PHEV, and we measured a P440e test car at 2,860kg with half a tank of fuel. Land Rover likes to talk a lot about its reductive design, it doesn’t like to be reminded at all of its additive engineering strategy. ‘Just keep piling the weight on, no-one minds’ seems to be the plan. which means you’ll soar past three tonnes by filling yours with fuel, family members and their belongings. But most mainstream manufacturers appear to have long since given up on fighting size and weight, concentrating instead on mitigating their effects with technology. The latest Sport certainly packs an arsenal of that. An optional handling pack brings all-wheel steering, an electronic differential, brake-based torque vectoring and something called Dynamic Response Pro – a 48V anti-roll programme to help the car corner somewhat flatter than physics might otherwise wish. Low-gearing as well as hill descent and terrain response systems gives it Land Rover’s usual 4x4 cred, too. It doesn’t break the rules of physics though. That same P440e took 108 metres to stop from 100mph, and over 40 metres from 60mph, some of the worst braking figures we’ve ever recorded. “One of the pioneering performance SUVs uses plug-in power to stay relevant in its third generation” There’s evolution and revolution all at once here. Smart plug-in hybrids launch the third-gen Range Rover Sport and a fully electric version follows soon after, but those loyal to the brand (and buying their umpteenth example) ought not to feel too frazzled by the new aesthetic inside and out. It’s very cleanly designed, well executed and desirable, if not as convincingly and confidently executed as the full house Range Rover. The design here is more anonymous. And forget any pretence of sportiness. The weight sees to that. But handling prowess was never the Sport’s bag – it’s about attitude, and this still has it. Plus comfort, image and luxury. Land Rover knows how to nod back to its tradition better than most. And in a world of increasingly gnarly performance SUVs, the comparatively plusher edge of the latest Sport does exactly that. Lows Priced for the gods, plug-in hybrid limited to Autobiography trim, third-row space is tight. Verdict Comfortable enough for a cross-continent tour and rugged enough for a trail ride, the Range Rover is a jack-of-all-trades SUV with a price tag to match. The Range Rover has been the SUV of choice for celebrities and wealthy elites for decades, but even though it pampers its passengers like a luxury car it still offers off-road capability that means it can venture well off the red carpet. All models come with all-wheel drive, an adjustable air suspension, and plenty of ground clearance. You can choose between inline-six, plug-in-hybrid, and V-8 powertrains. You can also deck the Range Rover out with all manner of luxury features, including massaging seats in both rows, rear bucket seats, power-deployable rear-seat tray tables, and a beverage chiller. No matter which version you choose you'll pay a six-figure price, which means the Range Rover automatically costs more than entry-level versions of rivals such as the Cadillac Escalade, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-class. But it's exactly all of this obvious extravagance that attracts the Range Rover's image-obsessed buyers, and after sampling several variants of this latest generation of the luxury SUV, we can see why. What's New for 2024? It's still early in the Range Rover's fifth generation, but already Land Rover has tweaked the powertrain lineup for 2024. The plug-in-hybrid P440e has been replaced with a more powerful P550e which makes 542 horsepower. P400 and P530 models see no changes to their horsepower ratings, but the top-spec SV model is now powered by a 606-hp V-8 engine that wears the P615 moniker. Elsewhere, Land Rover has introduced a new customization service called SV Bespoke which provides buyers more opportunities for personalization when building their dream Range Rover. Pricing and Which One to Buy P400 SE: $108,875 P530 SE: $131,750 P550e Autobiography: $142,575 P530 Autobiography: $167,750 P615 SV: $210,475 We'd recommend opting for the mid-range Autobiography model, which adds several sought-after items that luxury buyers will appreciate. For example, the Autobiography comes standard with a 1600-watt Meridian stereo system featuring headrest-mounted speakers and active noise cancellation. The Range Rover will be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase body styles, and we suggest going for the latter since it creates room for a third row of seats and provides a more generous cargo area. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The Range Rover is available with a quartet of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system dubbed P400 that develops 395 horsepower. During our initial test drive, it proved to be silky-smooth and provided adequate pep to tug the large Range Rover around. A 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine—Land Rover calls it P530—is even perkier and cranks up the Range Rover's towing capacity to 8200 pounds. At our test track, the P530 hustled the Range Rover to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds; the P400 did it in 5.5 seconds. A 542-hp plug-in hybrid option—called P550e—is also available but only on the short wheelbase Autobiography trim, and the range-topping SV comes with a 606-hp V-8 called P615. Our long-wheelbase P400 test vehicle managed to hit 60 mph in a fairly brisk 5.5 seconds while the short-wheelbase P530 we tested did it in just 4.3 seconds. The Range Rover's ride is suitably plush and, with its adjustable air suspension set to Comfort mode, it virtually floats down the road. The question is - If you’re looking to splash the cash on a high-quality SUV, which should you choose? Well, Mat is here to run you through these two contenders to see which is best! When it comes to the design, these two are pretty different to each other but still look good from the outside. Not only are they both imposing due to their size, but they both manage to stand out. The Range Rover looks sophisticated from the front to the back, while the BMW X7 looks pretty imposing with an aggressive front end. Both cars come with a high-quality interior, too. The X7’s cabin is covered in high-quality materials, and this face-lifted edition comes with BMW’s all-new infotainment screen and system - the same one as found in the new iX. It comes with a number of physical buttons, and almost most controls are managed within the screen. The Range Rover also has an all-new infotainment system, coupled with a large infotainment screen on the dash. It has more physical buttons than the BMW, but unfortunately, there are a couple of bits of plastic trim to be found. Both cars come with various engine options, and the range-topper in both is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8. However, while the Range Rover can produce 523hp, BMW is slightly up on power, at 530hp. Finally, we have the price. Naturally, neither car is cheap, but while the BMW X7 range kicks off at £85,000, the Range Rover comes in a fair bit higher, at £107,000! If you want the two cars we have here, they will cost you £116,000 and £127,000 respectively. So which is best - the X7 M60i, or the Range Rover LWB? Interior, Comfort, and Cargo As with past generations of the Range Rover, this new generation model offers a plush interior decked out with rich leathers and woods, but buyers who want a more sustainable cabin can now opt for a new leather-free option, which subs-in wool or other textiles. The interior can be arranged to seat four, five, or seven depending on configuration and wheelbase. The third row, even in long-wheelbase trims, may not fit tall adults as the headroom there is somewhat limited, but shorter riders and kids will find it nearly as comfortable as the second row. An optional motorized divider for the cargo area helps keep things from moving around too much during travel, and the Range Rover's split rear liftgate can be used as convenient and comfortable seating for outdoor events.
