Lewis Hamilton said he'd never seen a car as fast as the Red Bull RB19 after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. And he wasn’t only talking about its all-round performance. For Hamilton was also amazed at the speed differential when Max Verstappen overtook him at the end of lap 11, breezing past on the run to the first corner. What makes the Red Bull RB19 so dominant? Aerodynamics, right? Well, yes and no. It’s no secret that the Red Bull produces a huge amount of downforce – and remains aero efficient given it’s great straightline speed both with and without DRS, but something else is key to the grip level it produces. After Red Bull’s amazing winning streak ended in Singapore, Formula 1 headed to Japan wondering if that shock defeat would mark the beginning of an important shift in the competitive order, or turn out to be merely a minor blip for F1’s dominant team. Max Verstappen appeared to give us an emphatic answer - beginning Red Bull’s Japanese Grand Prix weekend by lapping comfortably fastest in both Friday practice sessions. In the first, he blitzed the field by more than 1.3 seconds on his FIRST flying lap, before finishing up six tenths of a second clear of the field. There are always a multitude of reasons to explain why the fastest car in Formula 1 is so good. But George Russell came up with an unusually extreme claim about Red Bull’s advantage over Mercedes during the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend.
