They are simple because they can be divided into three possible positions based on the positioning of the defending king: 1. The defending king can blockade on a square opposite to the colour of the bishops - easy draw 2. The defending king is far away and the attacker can force a bishop trade - easy win 3. The defending king prevents the trade because it can control key squares - draw #chess

In this video we explore the winning technique for same color bishops where one side has a far-advanced pawn. Such endings often arise in practice between closely-matched adversaries. There is a way to salvage the worse side if you control one critical square, but not if the pawn is a far-advanced knight pawn. There are many more situations in same-color bishop endgames to know but this one is very common and a must to know.

👉 Want to improve in chess? Check out our free website: 🤍 👉 Support the channel with a donation: 🤍 In this series about bishop endgames, you will learn how to play endgames with opposite and same colored bishops. These two types of endgames will be covered in detail based on practical examples which often appear in chess games. Not only will you learn different techniques and methods on how to win these endgames with bishops and pawns, but also techniques on how to hold a draw, like the so called “Fortress” in case you are down in material. In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy will teach you the basic theory of same-colored bishop endgames. Summary: Basic method is to get rid of the enemy bishop or to get rid of the bishop from the diagonal, in order to exchange the bishops when it is a same colored bishop endgame so that you can simplify into a pawn endgame. When you try to exchange the bishops make sure you don’t blockade your own pawn from moving forward. Most important about this technique/ the basic thing you should remember: Finding the best square for your bishop to cover the diagonal or to kick your opponent’s bishop away. You have to combine kicking your opponent’s bishop away with winning time to promote your pawn. When the diagonal for that Bishop does not become so long, it is always useful to check if you can simply attack this bishop with the king. What if your opponent’s king is very close and active (= Active King)? - This plays an important role and is very important - Basic drawish pattern! - You have to activate your King to have a chance. 📘 The pgn to this video can be downloaded on our website! ✏️ Don't miss to solve the provided exercises for this video on our website! — ⭐️ Social Media Links: Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Lichess: 🤍 Twitch: 🤍 — ♛ Chess Set Links: ➡️ Green chess set: 🤍 ➡️ Wooden chess set: 🤍 — #Chess #Chessfactor #ChessfactorIntermediate #Endgame #BishopEndgames

In anticipation of a live stream on opposite color bishop endgames, here's an outline of six principles at work in a single endgame puzzle. This example and the principles are from "Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual" by M. Dvoretsky. The principles are (in rough order of appearance): 0) Inherently drawish - being down 2-3 pawns may easily draw 1) Position matters more than material 2) Fortresses are the route to successful defense, and preventing fortresses is the key to winning 3) Pawns in the crosshairs is a key defensive technique 4) Attacking side puts pawns on the opposite color of their bishop while defending side puts pawns on the same color 5) One-diagonal principle is the key to defending against multiple threats indefinitely

♕ FULL VIDEO ►: 🤍 ♕ ARTICLE ►: 🤍 ♕ 🤍 ♕ 🤍 Chess endgames are very important for players of all levels. However studying endgames is even more important for beginner chess players because understanding basic principles in the endgame will increase your understanding of subtle positional concepts in the opening and middlegame as well. For example, knowing that in most positions you want to avoid placing your pawns on the same color as your bishop as it restricts the mobility of your bishop will definitely help you play better. Or understanding this rule as it applies to Bishop and Pawn endgames, for example if you and your opponent both have light-squared bishops - then whoever has their pawns on light squares will definitely be worse because the pawns will not only restrict the mobility of that bishop, they will be susceptible to attack from the opening. Below I have included the starting positions from the two exercises in the chess video - I recommend that you first try to analyze and solve these positions to test yourself before watching the chess video. 👉 Want to improve in chess? These two types of endgames will be covered in detail based on practical examples which often appear in chess games. Not only will you learn different techniques and methods on how to win these endgames with bishops and pawns, but also techniques on how to hold a draw, like the so called “Fortress” in case you are down in material. In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy will teach you exceptions for the techniques we learned so far. The biggest problem for the defender is the short diagonal, which is basically the key to win this endgame. But it does not mean, that a short diagonal cannot lead to a draw. If you play it wrong, it can end in a draw. Summary: It is also possible to deflect the bishop, so that the promotion square is no longer attacked/ so that the opponent’s bishop loses the control over the promotion square. This is mainly possible, when the diagonal is short. This is the main enemy of the bishop. In case the diagonal is long, this idea of deflecting is difficult to establish. General rule: If the pawn is on the e- or d- file and you have an active king, the game can be kept a draw by use of the drawish pattern. If we have a pawn on the b- or g-file, it is extremely important to stop that pawn as soon as possible, because if it comes to the 7th rank it is fatal, because the diagonal is too short. If we have pawns on the a- or h-file it is very difficult to hold the game drawish. If we deal with pawns on the c- and the f-file, the goal is to stop the pawn as soon as possible, but if the pawn reaches the 7th rank it is not necessarily a lost game. It depends on the concrete placements of the kings.

You may skip the first 2 minute part and then the actual video begins. This video is about the basic bishop endgames we should know by heart. I have discussed the methods in this video that what method to apply if you face 2 pawns + king or 3 pawns + king against your lone bishop + king. This endgame clearly shows the proper way to handle the positions instead of blindly calculating the moves. If you know the techniques then it is just like baby's task for you. (In fact these are 1000-1400 rated endgames but I have seen that even 2000 rated players don't know the technique) The opposite-colored bishops endgame is a chess endgame in which each side has a single bishop and the bishops reside on opposite-colored squares on the chessboard and thus cannot attack or block each other. Without other pieces (but with pawns) these endings are widely known for their tendency to result in a draw. These are the most difficult endings in which to convert a small material advantage to a win. With additional pieces, the stronger side has more chances to win, but not as many as when bishops are on the same color. Many players in a poor position have escaped a loss by trading down to such an endgame. These endgames are often drawn even when one side has an advantage of two or even three pawns, since the weaker side can create a blockade on the squares on which its bishop operates. So, please watch, enjoy & learn.
